Why Serious Indoor Players Train on the Beach

Beach volleyball forces athletes to be involved in every play, accelerating development in a way indoor alone cannot. Players learn to control the ball, make better decisions, and adapt to different conditions, all while building a stronger, more complete game. At the highest levels, many top indoor athletes consistently train on the beach because of how much it sharpens their performance. If your goal is to improve quickly and stand out, this is one of the most effective ways to do it.

Even some of the biggest names in volleyball have credited the beach for their development. Karch Kiraly, the only player to win Olympic gold in both indoor and beach volleyball, has long emphasized that beach players develop a more complete skill set because they are forced to do everything on the court. More recently, athletes like April Ross and Phil Dalhausser have shown how transferable those all-around skills are at the highest levels of competition.

For indoor players, the benefit starts with movement. Training in the sand forces your body to work harder with every step — building strength, balance, and control in ways that simply don’t happen on a hard court. When athletes transition back indoors, they feel lighter, quicker, and more explosive.

But the biggest difference shows up in how players handle the ball. On the beach, there are no easy touches. There’s no system to hide in. Every pass, every set, and every defensive play has to be clean and controlled. Over time, this creates a level of consistency and precision that directly translates to indoor performance.

There’s also a mental shift that happens. Beach volleyball simplifies the game — not by making it easier, but by putting more responsibility on each player. You have to read the game, make decisions, and adjust in real time. That experience builds a higher volleyball IQ and a level of confidence that carries over into indoor competition.

That’s why more indoor athletes — from high school players to professionals — are intentionally adding beach training into their development. It’s not about replacing indoor volleyball. It’s about becoming better at it.

As Karch Kiraly has said, the beach “teaches you every skill in the game.

And for players who are serious about improving, that’s exactly the point.

  • Better Ball Control

On the beach, you can’t rely on perfect passes or controlled environments.

    Players develop:

    • Cleaner platforms
    • More consistent touches
    • Better control under pressure

This directly translates to stronger indoor passing and defense.

  • Improved Movement & Athleticism

    Training in sand builds:

    • Leg strength
    • Explosiveness
    • Balance and body control

When players return to the court, the game feels faster and easier

  • Higher Volleyball IQ

    Beach forces players to:

    • Read the game
    • Make decisions independently
    • Adjust in real time

This creates smarter indoor players who understand the game at a deeper level.

  • All-Around Skill Development

    Indoor players often specialize early.

    Beach forces you to:

    • Pass
    • Set
    • Hit
    • Defend

You become a complete player — not just a position.

Why College Coaches Value Beach Experience

College coaches aren’t just looking for position-specific players—they want athletes who understand the game, move well, and handle any situation.

That’s what beach volleyball develops.

Beach players take every contact—passing, setting, attacking, and defending—building a more complete, confident skill set. Many top programs value athletes with beach experience for this reason.

As Karch Kiraly has emphasized, beach players tend to be more complete because they develop all skills, not just one role.

In recruiting, that shows up as:

  • Consistent passing under pressure
  • Better decisions in broken plays
  • Faster adaptation to systems
  • Higher awareness and control

Beach also builds composure. With no backup, players learn to problem-solve, communicate, and compete through adversity—traits coaches prioritize.

For indoor athletes with long-term goals, beach volleyball isn’t extra—it’s an advantage
